In vanilla I sometimes used space artillery to counter bomber spam. It isn't as efficient as using corvettes, but it also means I don't have to field my own bombers.
I'm also kind of glad that space artillery was removed - those ships were a pain in the ass.

Also, if you're worried about the whole hardpoints thing, just retarget mid-salvo. All in all, the wasted shots still don't add up to much.

Yeah, with the rebalancing that the mod team did, when the torps still bypassed shiels, it was WAY too easy to win.  Just spam bombers and escort them with anti-fighter corvettes to keep them from getting destroyed before they deliver they're payload, and the enemy is a burning wreck before your caps even close to combat range.  This way they're still a threat en-masse, but a single squadron can't demolish an ISD by themselves.

Proton torpedoes don't bypass shields anymore, making bombers more of a nuisance than a credible threat, which screws the NR as they put more emphasis on starfighters.

Bombers are definitely still a credible threat. Stopping them from bypassing shields made it so the game is no longer 100% about who can spam more bombers which is essentially what the game becomes when they can. The NR does have emphasis on having better fighters and bombers, and yes this weakens them a bit more than the other three, but they also have the most powerful capital ships for most of the eras (except the Phalanx and Praetor), so they're far from screwed.

I also don't like ships can only be destroyed by destroying their hard points. This means a lot of wasted shots and reduces tactical range as in the vanilla game I could destroy a ships weaponry and leave it, removing it as a threat while not spending a lot of time and ships destroying it. Also reduces wasted shots when targeting hardpoints and is more realistic as ships generally go for the hull as its a bigger target that hardpoints and will destroy a ship more easily than just taking out its weapons and engines.

Not using EaW's hardpoint system just means that ships retain 100% of their power right up until they die, so the fact that you waste some shots in a salvo after they die is a small price to pay.
