In the NJO, the records from the OJO were for the most part unavailable (presumably destroyed in the Jedi Purge or subsequent events), therefore they did not associate any dangers with the ability when they rediscovered/developed it.

In the NJO, there was no knowledge of any danger from use of the Force Meld, and no record of such issues from OJO would have survived Palpatine's purge.
