Hey guys, quick question for all of the veteran players out there. I love playing as the New Republic but find their early ships to be rather underwhelming. Nebulon-B frigates in particular seem rather useless when compared to their Imperial Remnant variants (the Carrack and the Strike Cruiser, both of which have relatively high damage output for a ship that size). I've tried using them in an anti-fighter role, but CR90's pretty much have that covered. When it comes to early scouting or capital ship screening, the CR90's and fighters have that covered too. Alliance Assault frigates are more than capable of holding off some fighters/bombers and taking out enemy corvettes. I get the feeling I'm just using both the base Nebulon-B and the Nebluon-B2 incorrectly. They seem ok for taking out Lancer corvettes or enemy carriers but that's about it (and Alliance Assault frigates are fast enough to catch both of these ships and rip them apart without any problems). Nebulon-B's seems to lose in fights to carrack's and Strike cruisers.  What am I doing wrong?

Side note, I love the design of the Nebulon-B's, not sure why. Maybe I'm just expecting too much of them!

There a distraction for the enemy. While they are destroying it you use your fighters to kill them.

Rogue is kinda right, but it's not the full truth. They both have the power to shields ability, which if done right, instantly turnes the fight between a carrack and a neb B.
Nebulon Bs also come with a small fighter escort which considering that they have torpedoes also can do serious damage to smaller ships. Neb.B2s lose the fighter escort, but are a bit sturdier.
They can act as bullet sponges against enemy strike cruisers and carracks while your more potent damage dealers finish them, so you can minimalize your losses in the battle

Put them in the forward line and sprinkled through and get ready to hit the “super shield me”. They are a fantastic distraction to keep your other ships from being shot at. The AI typically shoots per fighter or ship with a first come first serve logic. Use this against this as well other players. I’ve also used them as dog packs to surround, while the wolves strategically strike. Recall that just using the big guns waists space as all ships have a limit to how many other ships can be engaged at once. I like flooding space with a ton of mid to small ships to confuse the enemy and limit what’s being shot at. The updates to 2.2 brought in a few fun mid and smaller sizes that have been great to play.
VSD’s/Chaf’s are still my favorite ships of all... off topic....

I'm reserving full judgement until 2.2 is out, but playing 2.2 demo...

Stock EaW generally ran with three levels of ships - corvettes, frigates, and Mon Cal cruisers/Star Destroyers.

2.2 demo adds the supers on top...and kind of invalidates frigates. The smallest ships are still useful in an anti-fighter role, but past that I haven't found it particularly useful to build anything smaller than Star Destroyers. (Granted, I'm not a great EaW/FoC/TR player by any means.)

YMMV.

(Incidentally, I'd love to see a war-in-the-Outer-Rim type mod where the combat all happens between small ships - Neb-Bs would be about the biggest vessel you'd regularly field. Building an ISD or MC80 would be the equivalent of building an Executor in TR. Alas, my game modding time is devoted elsewhere...)

When the mod editor comes out, you might get a chance to do that. Its an ambition I've had alot....

The Nebulons are to be avoided.  They drop fast because the AI likes to target them over anything else.  Unless you absolutely micromanage them their shields will drop under concentrated fire before you can click "power to shields"

Their damage is minuscule.  A Nebulon B2 cannot lower the shields on a Lvl 1 spacestation.

I usually sell them off.

You can sell/disband units?
