but once again, planets dont move randomly, they move in patterns that are calcultaed for

All the planets in the universe all revolve around things with a strong gravitational pull, an example the Sun(a star) has a strong gravitational pull and is keeping us in orbit due to its size, same thing with the moon, it orbits us and we call it a geosynchronous orbit.

Thats the end of my scientific plop. >_>

but those planet orbits aren't nessecarily stable. they can shift. I don't know if it happens often but it is possible. and even an few inches can make all calculations futile.

orbital shifts take thousansds of years

And They've gotten things to the moon with people on board, they've sent stuff to Mars, i think they can handle it, its not very difficult when you look at sending an explorer to Jupiter

well I ain't a rocket scientist so I don't know how easy is it. but I wonder why haven't someone made a nuclear powered space vessel?

Because if there is some gravitational turbulence leaving earths atmosphere you go BOOM!.

A nuclear powered space vehicle would require greater equipment and shielding, therefore would be much heavier and thus need much more fuel to get it into space from earth..

PS, check out this article on sending man to Mars: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7021303.stm

but nuclear powered vehicle wouldn't nessesarily be heavier. it doesn't need so big generator, a small one produced all power it needs.

But because it is nuclear powered, there needs to be much more shielding for the crew, which adds to the weight, and a nuclear power source is much more complex than other generators.

what do you mean much more shielding? it doens't need to be so much more than it already is.

Shielding against the radiation produced from the nuclear reaction.

well it doesn't add much weigh. surely not so much that it comes harder for the ship to leave earth and travel to space.

Extra equipment and hardware = greater mass = more fuel needed to lift off.

Why would they make a nuclear powered space craft, whats it gonna do, power a propeller? you forget that a nuclear engine wouldn't create any thrust

:P Probably use nuclear power for on board electricity for the long trip.. Going to Mars would be damn hard with only a couple of batteries..

solar power, a nuclear engine would be too big for the power needs of a spaceship

What do you mean "extra equipment and mass"? If you use nuclear power for power source they would naturally take off the systems they now use. that would balance it. and solar power is't very useful if you are going outward of the sun as the solar rays don't come there so much.

Yes, but i am assuming that a nuclear power source is larger/more complex than a standard power source, therefore it would have greater mass..
