Rebellion DVD?
« on: December 08, 2012, 09:07:30 PM »
So, I've thought about getting this, but I can't find ANYWHERE online where I can order a DVD, only a digital download.  Is there somewhere I can buy a normal DVD version of the game (not the Collectors Edition)?

Rebellion is a purely digital release, save for the Collector's Edition.

Bummer.  I'll have to start watching ebay for collectors editions then.  I just don't trust digital only releases (and yes, it's bad since I work in IT for a living).

Don't bother; you still need Steam in order to run the game and what have you; having the DVD of Rebellion will not change a thing.

And so the cycle is complete.  No PC is an island.  Neither is any new game.  Kinda sad.
Did you see that?  Know what that cost?  $58,000.  I mean, what a waste.  It wasn't even funny.  That's $58,000 that could have gone to curing leukemia.  Or.  muscular dystrophy.  Or... what does Michael J. Fox have?  That.  Alright, let's watch some damn cartoons.

Ah well, guess I'll never get to play the mod then, I refuse to put steam on any of my pc's.

Just out of mild curiosity; what do you find so bad about Steam?

Shame but in all seriousness it's impossible to get much of any fulfilment from PC gaming without using Steam these days.

You may as well go to consoles but then again even those are heading towards fully digital downloads.

I don't play enough games anymore to bother buying a console.  Just means less and less reason to have Windows on my machines anymore once ICW is done with 2.1 I guess.  :)

As far as Steam, it's not Steam itself I have issue with.  It's the fact that it's yet another password, yet MORE spam mail, and I want a physical copy, I don't want to have to sign into something every 6 months to redownload 4 Gigs of data because I reinstall my computers more often than some people I know change their underwear.

I've never gotten any spam from Steam (though I don't sign up for any newsletters, deals, etc).
Password is only issue, but it's hard to get away from every service that has their own login system these days. Every website, every social network, go figure.

Oh, I know HOW to save my data, it's just that it's so much easier to simply pop in a DVD, reinstall, and boom, like new!!  Just because companies are too cheap to spend the $.05 on pressing DVD's shouldn't be my problem.

Why do it that way when you can backup and restore installed games from within Steam itself?  As I recall it creates a nicely packaged backups folder for you to move.

That's entirely not the reason behind a digital only release. With digital sales, the publisher/game maker gets a MUCH larger share of the profits on each game sale than with retail. There's a nice thread on the Sins forums, by an SD guy, explaining all this.

Digital is all simple, no need to even redownload. It's all saved to a backup drive. I don't even need to find a DVD, find a DVD key, wait for the thing to copy. Plus digital saves material - no need for paper manuals, plastic DVDs, and cardboard boxes.

Two cents.

I used to prefer boxed products but ever since I got my first title on Steam I've just found it a lot easier for PC at least. When I got a new laptop I just wasted my University's internet to re-download my game library  :HA: . I wish I could say I like digital releases of games on the Xbox but their prices (even for older games) are absolutely ridiculous.

Here's a post from FrogBoy on Steam and digital distribution. In it he flat out says that Stardock would not have survived without digital distribution. In this day and age, I can't say I miss boxed releases that much, particularity not when the original developer is getting a greater share of the profits, as they should.

The only thing I miss about proper boxed copies is getting a decent manual (i.e. the sort that came with Civilization II).
