Star Wars Discussion / Solo Teaser
« on: February 05, 2018, 09:25:09 AM »

The first two teasers for the new upcoming movie about Han Solo :

Sounds not bad despite the main actor will have a hard time to go up to Harrison Ford's prestation. Han Solo is Han Solo because of him after all.

Is the girl Sana Starros from the comics ? Not sure if they will make such link despite what was promised.

Also there's rumors that a novel (or more likely a compilation of short stories) named Covalent Light will be announced to tie-in with the movie.

Hype is still low but start to grow. Just a hundred of days to wait from now.

Nothing stays in print forever.

Yes of course, but look like they don't want to wait, at least in France (and in Czech Republic and Italy as I've heard).

However I agree it is slightly surprising that Lucasfilm/Disney are saying no to a third party who wants to essentially continue giving them free money, although it could just be another publisher has already signed a new contract for Legends material.

There's still novels and comics not yet translated, some are poor and won't sale but some are very good (Mercy Kill for example which I read in English). Even the reprint, in sort of omnibus made excellent sales are they were long time out of print in France (Pocket is not Del Rey...). It is very unlikely they split the right from novels based on date of publication, particulary when Pocket want them.

Yeah I would be very surprised if they decided to stop printing legends so soon. Especially considering what type of outrage that would make.

We were surprised. We are outraged. I hope it will not happens in the US too but there's a possibility. One US fan say it couldn't happen before 2021. I don't know if it's true or on what he based such comment. And also Del Rey printed a good number of novels, you're not lacking them soon. But as I say it's a possibility. Already a reality here in France. I hope to spread the information that may change things... but sadly I have few hopes.

Also if the post has been deleted that can mean anything, so it could've a simple mistake that they wrote that.

It could be that, but it's more likely that the post went viral and get lots of comment. Of course I will tell you if there's a clarification.

No, you might have misunderstood me. But when reporting on these things you have to eliminate personal bias from your article, if I want to know that legends books are not going to be available in France.

That website asked opinions and the facts on the subject, I gave them exactly that.

I want to just know that and that's it, I don't want to see that the article has someone's personal opinion on to it because then I'm going to be more skeptical. I would say the exact same thing if it was the other way around.

I am really sorry that people should be allowed to have access to these book is an opinion that make you skeptical.

And again Disney doesn't hold the rights to star wars, they might negotiate for Lucasflim since they bought the company. But they didn't buy the rights to it. Also, people can want to publish the licence, but at the end of the day that's not up to them thats up to whoever controls the property.

What I told you is that both the publisher of comics and novels discuss that matter with Disney. They gave the orders that's all. Are they rightly to do so ? I don't know.

Also you don't know the situation either, as your source article states "Originating in an imprecise Google translation of Pocket's Facebook page, an alarming message has sent speculative shockwaves throughout the Star Wars community. Has Lucasfilm cut off French markets from Legends? Are they simply granting their license to republish Legends content to another publisher? What does this mean for access to Legends content throughout the European Union - and the world at large? All we can do is guess at this point. " literally no one knows what is happening.

That article was made by an american (she know nothing of this but saw that French fans were alarmed by this post and tried to understand) and she asked what was going. I, among others, answered. You want the sources, here are they :

Don't search for this post on Facebook he had been now deleted.

Welcome !

gets rid of the aspect of having to share publishing rights with many of the old authors(as even though Lucasarts owns and Disney also owns SW, books published in the prior era still have profits split among both the old publisher companies and authors.

I didn't know the old author still gets fees from the books.

Yeah this article is extremely biased so I wouldn't trust it. It literally says long live legends at the bottom of it.

Ok then everything comming from a fan of Legends is wrong ? I'm glad you expressed that, I know to what kind of person I am answering. Then this article is maybe biased, I wrote it. But everything is true.

What probably happened is that the license expired, and either A they are going to go to a different publisher or B they weren't selling well enough to justify a renewed license.

No. Absolutely not. Pocket want to have the licence. Legends sold well in France. The new reprints particulary as they were rare and probably because the new movies disapointed people.

Keep in mind that Disney doesn't own Star Wars per say, and its Lucasflim who still maintains control of the copyright. So it would be their decision to renew, not Disney.

Pocket and Delcourt discuss this matter directly with Disney which is the right holder and it's Disney, not Lucasfilm, who told them what the can and what they can't print. It's no conspiration it's a reality in France.

And if they were really going to cease the printing of legends material there would be some sort of announcement or whatever. So in conclusion the article is just playing up the issue rather than actually telling us what's happening.

We got that announcement in France, what I can tell you more except beware for your market ? If it's just playing for you, ask and I will answer. I tought I made this clear but look like you don't (want to ?) understand.

I expected people may say they didn't care, but telling that it's lies is very and even more harmful.

Discussion, Suggestions and Feedback / Re: 2008 Clone Wars Cartoon
« on: February 04, 2018, 01:34:23 PM »
The show originally came out on Cartoon Network, and no matter what examples one can put forth, the primary and dominant market of that network is young kids and teenagers.

Compare the Original Movies, the Prequel Movies, the cartoon CW and the animated TCW. The former three can be watched by child and yet the adult can found something for them in it. Each screen of Tartakovsky’s Clone Wars had strenght, not just filler to go up to 20 min.

Adults watching can understand the bigger picture of the narratives, and big time Star Wars fans can enjoy the fan service the show provided. In that way it was a success.

Are you kidding ?
Big picture with battle of no more than 50 participants, Ashoka seeking her lightsaber, Gungan diplomacy, zombies, Godzilla-like, Obi-Wan faking his death or Dooku and ANakin tied together by a band of pirates ?
Mandalorian pacifists is no fan service, it's fan insult... And so on with Vos, Ventress, Barriss, Aura Sing, the Night sisters,...

there was very little interest in Star Wars as a result.

Sure if we live in a world where you need a movie every year (even if the quality suffers from that) to people have interest in something :(

Ahah I noticed I got a -2 today for telling my view of TCW, I feel some get butthurt by a reality check on it

Hello guys,

At least three european countries had received restriction on the publication of  Legends materials.

Here's an article which summarize the situation in France. I urge you to have a look at it, if you care a little about the former universe (the particular restriction on the comics may even interest the fans of Disney's futur movies and projects) :
http://www.theexpandeduniverse.com/single-post/2018/02/02/Mort-des-L%C3%A9gendes-Part-III

Is that an insight that they will do the same in the US too ? Look like as there is no economic reason behind this, only that Disney want to erase the former universe and make it disapear, in the shops and in our minds. Is that because most of their books/comics are inferior to the former ones or that because they want to re-use in mass the content (particulary characters) in "new" stories ?

Disney is not assuming the legacy of the licence they bought, it's lame...

Thanks for reading

TCW has been one of Lucasfilm's most successful projects.

I'm not sure what's your definition of successful, Lucasfilm lost a lot of money with it.

It single handedly has helped reduce the amount of vitriol the Prequels got on the Internet post-Mr Plinkett reviews.

I just can't understand that... The Prequels have far more depht and are far less childish than TCW. It's just that people wanted a cool Anakin and have no interest in story...

I like some parts of the old Legends Clone Wars, but as Corey as said, it was always a very inconsistent part of Star Wars even before TCW.

Yet the timeline could be seen as one consistent story, that was no longer the case with TCW. I suggest to have a look at Nathan P. Butler's Timeline Gold if you don't agree : http://www.starwarsfanworks.com/timeline/download.html

TCW streamlined the timeline to make it accessible to a wide audience. I've seen many examples of people who became fans of Legends material because of TCW.

it is why my younger brother is now interested in the expanded universe

Well the same way the Droids and Ewoks cartoon and movies made this before. I am happy new fans discover the Legends through it but while growing up they need to accept the cons of the show and that it is incompatible with the Legends continuity. If they don't, they still had a new canon made by the Story Group...

I like it a lot more than the 2d one.

In term of length, CW is equivalent of two 3-episodes TCW story arc. Quote me two story arc from TCW that have much depht, story, memorable scene, purposeful screenplay, without the stupid dialogs, characters and so on.

Even the 40 hours of show can hardly have the same amount of good points than the 2 hours of Tartakovsky’s Clone Wars which didn’t treat the audience like children, instead using a sophisticated array of cinematic technique to convey complex themes without being blatant.

Really, I probably spend more time responding to comments about people trying to tell us the cartoon isn't part of Legends than I actually spent trying to suss out where we'd need to make adjustments.

Sorry to be that one more guy, but I'm sure you understand that a good part of Thrawn's Revenge community are fans of the now Legends timeline which was torn apart by TCW like never before, in number and scale. That's why it's a delicate subject, not to mention the poor quality of the show. For a good part of fans it's good to think TCW is not part of that universe as Lucasfilm/Disney is too lazy and don't care of such details to decide (for them the Legends is dead and they even cut publication rights in some countries).

The Clone Wars cartoon and every part of it is part of the Legends canon.

The difference of timeline's would have been the only good point of the reboot : get ride of TCW and all of its inconsistencies and stupid content from the former universe, with which it is simply incompatible.

If you're ever unsure whether something counts as a legitimate source for the mod, the best place to check is the Essential Guide to Warfare.

The Shadow Collective is not in the EGtW as it was published before the invention of the Shadow Collective (considering how late it was introduced make clear that it can't be played alongside the Republic and the CIS). I have most respect for the work of Dan Wallace and Jason Fry but by now all the retcons of the EGtW seems quite pointless... but still the best reference we have.

Even if the Vong were added they wouldn’t be able to use there world ships unless hey made super small ones that are only 10 to 20 km

Some of the worldship were quoted at 10 km in Vector Prime. That being said, I would prefer to have the Yuuzhan Vong in Ascendancy. But that should be a nightmare to have them balanced with other factions and still with a specific gameplay which would portray their uniqueness in the lore.

Rolster ? ???

This faction belongs to a Story Group Canon mod, not one based on Legends timeline.

It's not because the dev' team is gonna use some heroes from TCW (such as Trench, as the CSI lacks space heroes) that they gonna add an entire (insignificant in both storyline and military capabilities) faction.

Great read as always !

everything turns into blue and white pretty lines

To be precise, the ship goes into another dimension.

My question is on the specifics of how fast hyperspace travel is and how long it takes to travel in the sense of averages, and if it's been actually put down to numbers yet.

No, each author chose as it fits the best his story but some sources can quote things possible/impossible, but nobody sorted something out from them.

Discussion, Suggestions & Feedback / Re: Nebula and endurance talk
« on: January 17, 2018, 05:26:42 AM »
I think you're forgetting that New Republic fighter wings are only 3 squadrons so if we take the Starships of the Galaxy Sourcebook number of 5 squadrons + 2 wings, that only comes out to 11 total squadrons.

I've always read that a NR wing is composed of 5 or 6 squadrons but look like I was mistaken. 11 seems not much for such carrier.

When you see the fighter complement of the Venator is 4/12 and that of the Endurance 5/11, even considering the quality of the NR fighters, it's not fair, particulary for a pop cap of 7. According to Cracken's Threat Dossier, the Endurance have two wings (12 squadrons ?) with one of Defenders and K-Wings (probably one group of 3 squadrons each) and one of snubfighters while Starships of the Galaxy Sourcebook quote 5 squadrons + 2 wings (15 squadrons in total ?) for the Endurance. I therefor think its fighter complement should be something like 6/12 or 5/15. I can understand why the Executor's fighter complement was upgraded compared to the lore but I don't understand that "downgrade" of the Endurance which should be one of the best ship of the NR. That's somewhat apply to Ascendancy as well.

There's even two origin stories that tells how Leia know and visited Crait... If interested, I've heard there's a guy on Twitter who list them.
