Discussion, Suggestions & Feedback / EotH - canon and original units
« on: January 09, 2016, 10:21:16 AM »
I read in another thread that Corey said he wanted to keep the unit rosters to the canon of the Legends EU, the exception being Empire of the Hand where the team had to come up with original designs. So I'm wondering if I could get a list of which units are canon and which are original. So far, I've identified the following units as canon:

Houshold Phalanx
Airstraeker
Nsiss Clawcraft
Ascendancy Star Destroyer

And that's it! As for the heroes, the only one I've not found any mention of is Siath. So where does the inspiration come for the rest of the Hand's arsenal? Also, I presume the Brask is based on Brask Oto from Survivor's Quest, is this correct?

I've discovered that thanks to Star Wars: Uprising, Zann Consortium is canon. We've also got Carracks and Lancers brought to canon.

Well there's at least a little wiggle room for Dark Forces II. But the games after that, yeah, they're very much Legends territory.

Most importantly for me was the New Republic. Long ago when all we had on The Force Awakens was rumours, one rumour was going around saying the Empire quashed the Rebels' attempts to form their government. Then when the Battle of Jakku was brought to light, I jumped for joy to see it was a battle between New Republic and Imperial holdouts.

MAJOR spoilers for The Force Awakens and other new material ahead.

It seems to me that with the new canon leading up to Force Awakens and TFA itself, they cherry-picked certain aspects of the old EU to incorporate into the new canon. Although our favourite Remnant leaders and warlords have vanished from canon, the events of the Imperial Civil War were condensed into a single year - the Moffs squabbled over who should lead the Empire, the New Republic took advantage of the situation and struck hard and fast, forcing them into a peace treaty that put an end to Imperial application of power. And anyone who's seen TFA knows that it takes quite a few things from the old EU - the return of Anakin's lightsaber, Luke going into hermitage in search of old Jedi secrets, the offspring of a certain couple turning to the dark side... and the death of an original trilogy main character.

End spoilers.

Discussion, Suggestions & Feedback / Re: EoTH strategy

Chafs and Syndics (and Phalanxes in era 3) are great for hit-and-run attacks thanks to their indestructible engines, and the EotH have generously been given half the retreat countdown. Drop them in, destroy key targets, then jump out. Don't expect to win through superior or overwhelming force all the time, fight wars of attrition.

That's weird, they're available when you play Final Imperial Push as IR.

I have to say the idea of the Imperial military being inferior to the Republic's actually makes a bit of sense politically. The Clone Wars was a case of the Republic fighting a conventional and large enemy force, and the fear of the war encroaching on Republic planets was enough to keep the populations in check and the credits flowing into the budget. By the end of that war, you've got an Empire with no real threat to it and you need to keep a galaxy subjugated, so you cut costs to maintain a military force that isn't so specialised against a certain enemy, designed to inspire fear, and meeting the minimum needs to overcome insurrection - the money you save goes towards paying governors to keep their people subjugated and building Death Stars.

I've been playing through the Imperial Civil War GC as IR and deliberately killed off my heroes to get to era 5, however, none of my capital shipyards have Tectors available.

Yeah, I bought Rogue Leader again (after previously having it and trading it in years back) and was surprised at how hard it is!

I'm not sure if I remember this correctly, but if I do, something posited about Darth Vader's lightsaber in the Star Wars Fact File magazine was that it emitted a shield up one side of the blade, essentially giving it a blunt side.

I can't remember where I read it, but I remember someone pointing out that all lightsaber users are actually using their lightsabers completely wrong and impractically to begin with. The way they swing them seems to be to drive force into the blow, when actually, considering they're blades of intense heat that cut on contact, you don't need to deliver a blow with any force at all as you would with a solid metal blade, and that fencing would be a much more viable fighting style.

TIE Fighter, as far as I'm concerned. Screw shiny bloomy graphics, nothing will make me feel more like a crucial fulcrum of the Imperial military than that game.

Mind you, it might make a bit more sense to play era 5 and just kill off all your heroes.

And by that, I'm talking about the original 2, not the upcoming one. Do you reckon such a mod would be possible to realise? I understand that in terms of the New Republic and Imperial Remnant, there's not really much to mod for the Rebels and Empire, but it would be awesome to see the Clone Wars factions changed to Hand and Pentastar.

At least it's not the Galactic Alliance when it was led by a former Solo turned Sith Lord :P

I know, it's far cooler :P I'm torn over whether I Order 66 the Jedi again or pretend they're just going with it.

Other RPs I've come up with use the Pentastar Alignment's Clone Wars era units to play as any of the following: a group of Republic forces who fled the rise of the Empire, a resurrected Trade Federation and Banking Clan, or combine both side's units to make an unholy union of the former and Separatist holdout allies-of-convenience.

And a simple concept to realise, play FTGU as the Remnant and imagine you're the Remnant of the Remnant on its absolute last legs.

Choices of One has a good bit of Empire of the Hand stuff going on, but it's mostly in the background, and is never explicitly referred to as such - but it's a fine novel, as is Allegiance, and I definitely recommend both as well.  [...] So if you're craving more Empire of the Hand... I'm sorry to say, but in the end, you're going to be somewhat disappointed, unless I've just missed a bunch of stuff (and since I've barely read any comic books/graphic novels, that's quite possible).  Little truly deals with them directly, which is in large part why Corey and the rest of the team had to create most (all?) of the EotH roster from scratch.

Indeed, and a fine job they've done with them. I was actually a little disappointed that Crisis of Faith featured TIE Fighters instead of Clawcraft. The only thing I know of that you've missed that features the Hand and its mythology is the Star Wars Gamer short story Red Sky, Blue Flame by Elaine Cunningham.

And hey, when it comes to seeking source material, it could be worse - I could be a Pentastar fan :P

Outbound Flight is very, very good.  I highly recommend it.

Just remember that Zahn is not the only good Star Wars author.  Matthew Stover, Michael A. Stackpole, Aaron Allston, James Luceno, Drew Karpyshyn, A.C. Crispin and many others have written quite worthy additions to the saga.

Well my focus on Zahn is because I too ventured into the post-RotJ EU with the Thrawn trilogy and then I got interested in the Empire of the Hand which only seems to get any love in Zahn's works. I've started reading Outbound Flight now, and after only finishing chapter 2, I can tell I'm going to like it.

I've only read novels by Timothy Zahn. The Hand Duology is excellent, I even preferred it to the Thrawn Trilogy since the trilogy is more your typical Star Wars story of warring factions and force users. In comparison, the Hand Duology is a lot more politically intricate and we get to see how Luke and Mara have to survive against a combination of natural hazards, intricate traps, and normal foes with tricks up their sleeves - no lightsaber duels in these novels. There are some characters featured in the novels who originated elsewhere, like Corran Horn and Soontir Fel, but the novels explain everything you need to know.

I've also read Survivor's Quest, which is a nice story focussing on an exploit of Luke and Mara alongside the Chiss as well as Stormtroopers and Chak Fel from the Empire of the Hand to explore the crash site of Outbound Flight. Not as twisty and intricate a story as the others, but it does have its moments, and again the Jedi have to face off against well-equipped and tactically-minded normal opponents instead of lightsaber dueling. There's also the novella Fool's Bargain which is included in the paperback version and features the Hand Stormtroopers as the main characters. If you're like me and prefer to see what the grunts get up to (especially if they're highly-equipped good-guy Stormtroopers), it's a nice simple story, and it gives a little insight into how the Empire of the Hand works militarily and politically.

I've yet to read Outbound Flight, and I'd also like to read Allegiance and Choices of One, but I have read the Crisis of Faith novella included in the 20th anniversary edition of Heir to the Empire. It's a decent war story and it's great to see a protagonist Thrawn commanding the Empire of the Hand in a game of out-predicting an equally intelligent and foresighted opponent. If you're a fan of Thrawn or want to see more of the Empire of the Hand, it's a must.

Surely HK wins by default due to being a droid and therefore less susceptible to detection through the force.

Discussion, Suggestions & Feedback / Role-playing with your forces
« on: June 27, 2015, 03:17:51 PM »
Something I always enjoyed in other RTSes like the Dawn of War games is incorporating a little role-playing in the manner of shaping your forces to fit a theme and making your own little story in your mind behind your battles. My own example is an era 5 NR campaign with the idea that at this point, the New Republic is just repeating the same mistakes as the Old Republic, having become so corrupt and heavy-handed that they've started turning into a resurrected Empire themselves. This is reflected in using heroes with Imperial ships like Wedge and Booster, and using the biggest and heaviest units available like the Viscount, Nebula Star Destroyers, Heavy Trackers, etc. It takes time to form your themed forces and they're not always efficient forces to actually fight with, but it certainly is fun forging your own backstory while playing the game.
