So which one do YOU think is a better one? *poins finger to everyone who is reading this post*
-
I think both compulsory and voluntary service have their merits. Although i prefer a voluntary system, since it is freedom of choice for the people. On the other hand, compulsory service seems to work very well in Switzerland.
-
I think compulsory service is good because it teaches discipline. I don't think that not many who have been in the army go to the streets and and become junkies. But for a large country with big military budget, like USA, I think that it is better to have voluntary service. But for a small country with low budget, like Finland, compulsory military service is a must. It helped us during the World War II.
-
No one in the army became a junkie? You havent seen some US vietnam vets haave you?
-
He's from Finland, so probably not.
-
And if you read one of his posts he said that he thought voluntary service was best for America, and he said that the expierence in his country the junkie ratio is less.
-
some may become junkies but I think that it isn't so likely if you go to the army. And vietnam war veterans were all pissed because from their point of view they were betrayed by their country during the war.
-
Finland has a military?????????
Volintary
-
It depends on the need for service. If it is a large scale war then compulsory, but for a war like in Iraq, voluntary.

Switzerland is neutral, so how do we know how well it works?
-
Finland has a military?????????
Volintary
Yes Finland has military. It is Sweden that doesn't have military, according to Bush.
-
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH suprising :P
-
I always get coonfused with Scandanavia but i have been trying to refrain from that so i dont offend people.
-
What is so confusing in Scandinavia?
-
sweedes and the swiss people over here get them mixed up some times me thinks
-
What is so confusing in Scandinavia?
Well they all look the same on a map, and Finland And Sweden sound similar.
-
wth, finland and sweden? wow
-
Back on topic. Having a draft military service is wrong. It takes away our freedom. For those of you who live in the U.S., that is. Roosevelt purposely left our ships in Pearl Harbor so we would have a reason to enter the war. He issued the draft to give the poverty a way to earn money. Dont say, "Wheres your proof," cause somebody found a transmission warning us to get out.
-
stfu raptor, he didnt leave them there purposely and he issued the draft because we needed troops to fight
-
Ehh... wrong. and what does stfu mean?
-

I haven't heard of that. where did you get that information? your history lesson? Wouldn't it be stupid to sacrifice your fleet like that? And let me answer my own question: YES!. And now back to the topic that is military service.

And how does Finland and Sweden sound similar? Do you have a hearing problem?
-
where did you get that information?
My great uncle who fought in Iwo Jima. And my grandpa.
-
Who are you talking this time. and what info are you referring to?
-
i am talking to Ju my friend.
-
right. and what information did you mean when you asked where did I got it.
-
So your great uncle, a marine that fought at Iwo Jima knows that the preident of the United States, who he never met, decided to leave the US Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor to get owned? I dont think so
-
sounds weird. but maybe your great uncle was a general or something. Was he Macarthur?
-
no.
-
too bad.

-
that is true. raptor has posted amny things that aren't true.
-
Indeed he does and his points dont make sense. This makes his opinion look bad, but there is some possibility in it.
FDR wanted to get out of the depression. He hears of the suprise attack and decides that entering the war would jumpstart the economy. He didnt want to enter the war on a whim, that would hurt his reputation. So he decided to use this to make people want to enter the war and give them something to fight for.
-
Going to the aid of the allies is hardly going to war on a whim.
-
Yes, but the American people did not yet want to enter the war.
-
But he didnt need to have almost the entire Pacific Fleet decimated in order to enter the war, all that was needed was an attack, not a slaughter
-
I would preer compulsory because then we wouldn't jump to war at any chance we see.
-
Yes, but the American people did not yet want to enter the war.
But if the Congress wouldn't have allowed the war then it would have been a big mistake.
And then I have to thank USA for one thing it did not do during WWII
God bless United States of America!
-
Yes, but the American people did not yet want to enter the war.
But if the Congress wouldn
-
yep. why should they have wanted to go to war on the other side of the globe?

I think you should calm down and stop being confrontational, or the only thing that will be locked is your access to this site. Also take into account that I'm German, Arbiter is German, and you called every German evil, so you're not much better than anyone else here. Get back on topic everyone, and stop flaming nationalities.
-
i apoligize tyrant i did not mean all germans are evil i ment the nazis so Sorry
-
Lets keep the flaming down a bit.
-
yep let's do that. But the fact remains that russians killed more civilians and soldiers in concentrationcamps than germans.
-
when was that ???
-
When Stalin was in charge
-
yep. he killed tens of millions of people during his reign. but does anyone mention that. No. Everybody just talks about jews and how they suffered.
-
people talk about it, just not when discussing WW2 because they were on our side
-
Back on topic. There is a WW2 thread.

Back on topic.
-
aye aye skipper.
-
Back on topic, course 373 aye :P
-
I think volunteer service in countries with large populations, because not everyone is cut out to be a soldier.
-
true. but in countries that hasn't got so much population compulsory is better. Especially if their budget isn't big too. Like Finlands. It all depends on population.
-
And the countries current situation, like in the cold war European countries needed a bigger military than now
-
yep. big armies are not longer neccessary. I mean it is unlikely that a big war like WWs happens again. Althought my name is Evil, I doubt anyone will start a large scale war in near future.
-
Not with nukes around, the fighting happening will be aginst smaller countries, like Iraq and Samalia, and you dont need a huge army for that
-
And then there are all sorts of alliances like NATO and EU.
-
And they can all put in little forces and make a big one
-
That is what was intended but thats not how it is.
-
then who does it work.
