Title: Imperial Civil War 2.0 Startup Troubleshooting
Post by: Corey on August 31, 2012, 04:52:14 PM
If your mod crashes on startup, these are the most likely causes.

1. Make sure you completely remove 1.3 before installing 2.0. Do not install 2.0 directly over 1.3.
Just please, don't do it.

2. Make sure you have the Forces of Corruption RAM fix.
This can be found here: http://help.starwars.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/Star-Wars-Game-Update-and-Patch-list?section=Star-Wars
This can be found here: http://www.lucasarts.com/support/update/EAWFOC1_1.html#fix
The file you're looking for is called  FOC_RAM_MPLobby_update.exe

3. Make sure no other mods are installed into data.
You can have as many mods as you want in your mods folder, but if you have one hard installed overwriting the main Forces of Corruption data folder, it will cause a crash.

4. Make sure you're giving it enough time to load.
Unless you actually get an exception error, chances are you're just not giving the mod enough time to load. The mod is quite large, so it can take a few minutes to startup, especially on older machines.

If you've tried all of these, and still have problems, respond to this thread and I will try to help you.

It would seem I just can't get the game to start. I load up the game, the initial image shows and then it just crashes to desktop. :(

Do you get any error messages or does it just go from the Stormtrooper shoulder to desktop without the exception notice or anything?

It says the program has stopped responding. It never finds a reason why though.

When I start up the game, (starting at the main battlescreen to launch the game) all of the buttons and icons are messed up. It's like the MTD file has bad icons in it, or is corrupted, but when I open it with the MTD extractor, everything looks OK. I'm not sure what the issue is.

Any thoughts?

No I didn't. I forgot about that, but that fixed the problem. Thank you!

Game freezes/crashes at stormtrooper shoulder.  I alt+tab and see a message stating that an error has occurred and please see _logfile.txt and _except.txt (which I can't seem to find anywhere).  The error dialogue box gives me the option to cancel or to retry and attempt to debug the program.  If I click cancel the program immediately shuts down.  If I click retry, I get the message that SWFOC has stopped working.  I have installed the hotfix and the RAM fix and FOC is updated to 1.1.  This MOD is the only one installed in my mods folder and I have no mods hard installed.

Can you go into your Forces of Corruption\Data folder (not the mod's) and check if there's an XML folder with two files called Gameconstants.xml and Graphicdetails.xml in there?

It's possible. I would certainly recommend you try installing the RAM Fix since you reported in your other post that you're having trouble starting the mod.

still can't figure out why the game keeps crashing at the stormtrooper screen.
Title: Re: Imperial Civil War 2.0 Startup Troubleshooting
Post by: Corey on October 20, 2012, 02:00:52 AM
All I can really think of is that you've have to reinstall the RAM Patch, or another mod is conflicting with ICW (potentially in the EaW files), or you have two different MasterTextFile_***.dats. Those would really be the only reasons for a crash at that point.

Post by: MarekVulen on November 10, 2012, 01:12:48 AM
Just an FYI.  I figured out what the problems were.  First, It didn't like my vanilla foc installation, so I installed it from the Gold Pack.  (I bought the vanilla disc myself and received the Gold pack as a present).  Secondly, I had a NO CD fix installed on the game which the mod did not like either.  The game works great now and is truly a masterpiece.  Great job!

Okay I downloaded it and did the necessary changes required to use the mod (I installed it since I have the disc version). However, when I upload it (the opening intro screens are fine) it's when I get onto the main game screen things get glitchy:

http://tinypic.com/r/1zqy4o2/6

Notice the boxes above the main menu portion and near various captions of the other parts of the menu screen. I tried starting a game and I get those glitchy boxes everywhere. What did I do wrong in installing the game?

Have you made sure to install both hotfixes available on our ModDB (http://www.moddb.com/mods/thrawns-revenge) page?  As far as I know your problem is related to an issue that Corey fixed in one of those.

Hi there. First Gratz ant Thank you for this mod. It is awesome.
Sorry for this question, if it is stupid, but i have a problem. I have played this mod on a cracked version before and it worked just fine. Now i bought a original CD and i have problem running it. I can get into menu, even start a new game but... In Galactic conquest i dont even get to map. It freezes and i get error. In skirmish i can go to combat map, but i cannot see command bars and menu there. I have both patches and RAM fix. :-/ Please Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope.

I have the gold pack off of steam I set up the Modpath like this: sweaw MODPATH=Mods\ Imperial_Civil_War
the file directory is:C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Star Wars Empire at War\corruption\Mods\ICW2

When I launch it It just gives me the Vanilla FoC The advanced option is retaining it's setup but it Won't work. got any suggestions?
Title: Re: Imperial Civil War 2.0 Startup Troubleshooting
Post by: Corey on July 16, 2013, 04:51:45 AM
I answered this on Facebook, but the basic answer is your modpath is set looking for a folder called Imperial_Civil_War but you've renamed that folder to ICW2, or you've put your Imperial_Civil_War folder into another folder.

If you're going to use that modpath, you need to keep the default file structure where it looks like:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Star Wars Empire at War\corruption\Mods\Imperial_Civil_War\Data\etc...

where the bolded stuff is the folders installed with the mod and the rest is just your pre-existing FoC stuff.

I seem to have the same problem as Soran. It runs fine up until I select a game type in Galactic Conquest and hit "Start", which is when it freezes. Once I minimize it I get the message:

Quote
Exception has occurred. See _logfile.txt and _exception.txt for details

I could only find _exception.txt, but my computer skills are all rather rudimentary and the document does little to nothing to clear up the problem for me, mostly consisting of lines and lines of numbers.

I'm really hopping someone can help me out, I'm just dying to play this.

With steam you can't use the batch icon/shortcut. You need to set the launch options in steam and run it that way.

Hi, my mod has stopped working.

I did have troubles with getting a message saying CD can't be authenticated - I used to fix this by opening the DVD drive and closing it again. Now that doesn't work and now my damn stupid computer doesn't pick up on the fact that the disc is in the damn drive when I try and start Imperial civil war. Basix FOC starts fine thoug.

I've search the forums but I seem to be only one having this trouble.

. PS ram fix installed, still no joy.

Any help would be appreciated.

The Problem I have got was already mentioned but I still cant figure out why it isnt working.
To make a long story short I bought the Empire at War Gold Edition on Steam and I just get the vanilla version of the Game. I did everything like it is in the Manual.
My Path I use in Launch Options: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Star Wars Empire at War\corruption\Mods\Imperial_Civil_War
The Folder is there and I dont know why it isnt working. I assume it is because of the Gold Pack because I cant set up the Path specific for FoC but only for the Gold Edition.
Please help me I even bought it the second time because of this mod and i couldnt find the CD-Rom anymore.
Greetings
Christopher

If you're using the Steam version of EAW/FOC the only bit you need in Launch Options is MODPATH=Mods\Imperial_Civil_War (Steam knows the rest of the path).  Then just remember to start the game from the Steam client (you can't use desktop shortcuts etc because for some reason they will only ever launch Empire at War and not Forces of Corruption).

Hi! I'm trying to start this mod on my Empire at War Gold Pack Steam installation and I've followed the mod instructions to the letter.

I downloaded the Zip file, extracted the files in it, and placed the files in the mod folder of my steamapps corruption folder as per instructed.

I also put in the MODPATH=Mods\Imperial_Civil_War in the steam launch options, but when I press play on Forces of Corruption, the vanilla game keeps playing.

Would appreciate some help! I've been reading great things about this mod and I'm really excited to finally try it out after all these years.

To be 100% clear... all of the files exist in a folder called Imperial Civil War in your corruption/mods folder, yes?  You didn't just copy the files into the corruption/mods folder, but you have a corruption/mods/Imperial_Civil_War folder which has those files, correct?

Apologies for the false alarm. I realized after fiddling with the files for a bit that not all of the data from the zip file transferred over to the Mods folder. So after I pasted the missing data back in the mod activated normally.

It's a great mod! Only like an hour in the grand campaign. I'm bad with micromanaging so it's gonna take a while for me to finish it, but the skirmishes I've played have been really fun!

You guys did some great work and I'm really enjoying it. Thanks for all the hard work you put into the mod and the forum support!

I'd recommend starting from scratch.  Have Steam delete EaW's local files, then manually go and delete the folder to make sure that nothing is left in it.  Re-download and install EaW, then reinstall ICW on this fresh installation of EaW.  Make sure you set the modpath in the Steam launch options, then try launching through Steam (also make sure you're loading FoC through the Steam launcher, not vanilla EaW).

Hey,

I tried downloading the file for the mod but I'm having trouble with the installation. For some reason when I try pull up the download a "winzip" activation request keeps pooping up. Is "winzip" required for the mod to function? Thanks.

There are various archiving applications you can use to unpack and install the mod; it doesn't specifically require winzip.  Any activation pop-up is integral to winzip and not related to the mod at all (except that you're trying to use winzip to install the mod).

To be more specific, the "winzip" service seems to be the only thing that was downloaded at all. Every time I try to access the file for the mod, the "winzip" just poops up again. I'm not sure if I'm downloading the mod correctly. Everywhere I've searched and found the mod, I select it, and "winzip" poops up again. Any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong? Sorry that I'm such a newb at this :/

Sorry that I'm such a newb at this :/

You didn't download WinZip with it, you just downloaded the mod. The mod is in a compressed file called a zip archive. If you double click it, it'll try to open it with WinZip since that's usually what the file association is for Windows. Its the same idea as if you downloaded a Word document; it's the document you downloaded, and then if you open it, it'll run Microsoft Word to read the document. Dont double click the downloaded file; if you right click it, it should say "extract here" in the list of options. Do that and put the files where the manual/instalalation video say to.

Hmm....ok. So, I think I found one problem I was causing. Is there two parts to download for steam? Because I took the initial stance that there was only file I needed to download. So I downloaded the "RAR Archive" by itself. I figured out that I probably need to download the first zipdrive (Download Mirror #1: Gamewatcher Installer) but I'm a little hesitant trying to run it. I'll copy the link from your site that I tried downloading for both instillations I tried to receive.

http://www.strategyinformer.com/pc/empireatwarforcesofcorruption/mod/40143.html
http://www.strategyinformer.com/pc/empireatwarforcesofcorruption/mod/40144.html

I couldn't move the files from the download list or do much else with them. I could run the first one like I said, but I'm hesitant. If that's what I need to do then just let me know. Thanks for the help.

You do only need one file. There are different versions for differnt ways to install it. One's a regular installer that you run, the other is the rar that you extract. The end result is the same. That link is fine, but its also several years old. Download the version from the file list here: http://www.moddb.com/mods/thrawns-revenge , either zip or installer is fine, you don't need both.

Ok. I looked through the list of files to download and it brought me to the same location I tried to download in the first place. I can't get the recommended version for steam to install, it just keeps pooping up as "winzip" every time I try to use it. Should I just use the "Mirror 1" install version then?

Ok, I guess I'll try the installer that's above the RAR archive file. The RAR file is the one recommended for steam, so hopefully the installer will still work for me. Sorry that I'm over thinking this stuff and a little to hesitant to commit to moding the game. I've had a few bad episodes from downloading programing from the internet. My last computer crashed after I downloaded a Mozilla folder...it wasn't Mozilla to say the least. I had to scrap the old hard drive and I don't want to go through that again. Thanks again for all the patience in helping me.

If it's a rar file, you're still trying to use the outdated version from strategyinformer. The archive copy of the newest version is .zip, not .rar. Use the link from our ModDB that I gave you. The ones you linked to were for 1.2, which we released in like 2010 or 2011, and is incredibly outdated. The one I linked to is 2.1 and currently the newest version of the mod. We don't have control over the strategyinformer links, so we can neither update nor remove the old ones.

It also sounds like you're trying to run or open the file (ie Left click or double click); if you do that, it'll just open it in winzip - winzip does not come with the mod, it's pretty much always already on your computer. You need to right click it, and click "extract here" or "uncompress." You're not supposed to run the zip file, that just opens winzip to look at its contents, it's an archive that just keeps the files packed together for download. Windows has its own native compression tools as well, which will work.

The installer copy (again DO NOT USE THE STRATEGY INFORMER LINKS, USE THE MODDB LINK I GAVE YOU) will work fine, it just means you have to tell it a different place to install to, and you need to change Steam's launch options. The instructions for all of this can be seen in this video I made:

Well, I've tried your link several times. It only lists specifics about the mod but doesn't appear to display the download file itself. I looked around the link that you sent me and the only page I could find that has downloads on it seems to be the same one that I was using originally.

The exception to this seems to be the webpage that lists files. Is the "Imperial Civil War 2.1 Zip" file the one I need to download as a steam user? According to the file description, this file is uploaded as of 1Jan2014 and is intended as a steam variant of the mod. Thanks.

Yes, you are looking for the Files section. Specifically one of thse two:

http://www.moddb.com/mods/thrawns-revenge/downloads/imperial-civil-war-21-zip1
http://www.moddb.com/mods/thrawns-revenge/downloads/imperial-civil-war-21-installer

Again, you can use either of these for any version of the game the files they containa re ultimately the same. The difference is Steam users typically are less confused by the zip version since they would need to change the installation path the installer points towards.

I tried the recommended RAR file. The same thing happens, an advertisement for "WinZip" poops up and I can't access the file itself. So I'm not sure if I don't have the ability or not to even access the RAR file without some other form of programing. I'm in the process of downloading the installer. I'll let you know how that goes. Thanks.

OK, just uninstall winzip and install 7zip (http://www.7-zip.org/) instead.  It's open source so won't ask for registration, and it supports more filetypes than winzip.

Well never mind. I figured it out with enough research. I loaded the x64 bit from 7-Zip and installed the mod from the tutorial video. The mod loaded and everything seems to be working fine so far. I'll have to play the mod a little bit to get the hang of the changes. Thanks for all of the patience and help!

Hello! First off, let me say that for the time I played the mod, I've really enjoyed it (despite it crashing at the start of every other battle). I've logged a good twenty hours into the game before finally deciding I'd try and do some troubleshooting on the crashes. Unfortunately, the fixes I've attempted seems to have made matters worst and now vanilla FoC won't even start! When I select it, it loads up the vanilla game as if I had selected Empire at War. I've tried reinstalling twice, double checked the mod path, and just about everything else I can to get it to work. Any help I can receive would be greatly appreciated, as I just blew through the base game and found it really lacking without your great mod!

(I posted on this earlier, but after reading the first post here again, figured I should have posted it here in the first place. Feel free and archive the other.)

I'm using Windows 10 64 bit and am using the Steam version of the game.

Thanks for the speedy reply! To answer your question, I attempted to install the RAM patch ((couldn't do it, though I beleive it's corrected in the Steam version, still I tried), and switch the compatibility mode from Windows 7 to Windows XP SP2. For the life of me, I just don't get why, whatever the issue is, it isn't reset when I install the game. Could it be something in the registry or ... it has to be on my PC's end but for the life me of I don't know what it be.
Title: Re: Imperial Civil War 2.0 Startup Troubleshooting

Well, we'll start with just getting your FoC back to normal. First I'd say uninstall again through Steam, then go into your Steam folder and completely delete the folder for EaW if anything's left (it'll only uninstall most files, not everything if other stuff was added later) and then reinstall through Steam after that and see if it works normally. If so, we can get to mods.

Already tried that, twice in fact. That's why I'm so perplexed. I've had games in the past where problems carried over from one install to another because I didn't delete the settings tied to a .txt in the documents folder. But I've not found one of those so perhaps this game does it differently with the ini settings (assuming that's even a thing). I did go and backup then deletes the saves though that I found. Still, no luck.

Update: I FIXED IT!!!!

I decided to work off the premise that something was being left behind after the uninstall that I simply couldn't find (as I did delete the folder after the normal uninstall was complete). After being convinced it was something buried in the registry, I decided to pull up a proper uninstaller (Revo Uninstaller if you are interested) and do an advanced scan. Sure enough, it found 10 registry entries and deleted them. After one last install, the game pulls up like a charm. I do have a couple of wrap up questions:

1) Do I need the RAM patch if I'm running the steam version?

2) Which compatibility mode should I run things in? I confirmed that putting it to Windows XP SP2 is what caused it to mess up in the first place.

I've seen conflicting opinions on those two questions so I'd just like your input on it.
Title: Re: Imperial Civil War 2.0 Startup Troubleshooting
Post by: Slornie on January 17, 2017, 12:29:05 PM
1) No need for the RAM patch; the Steam build includes that natively.

2) Personally I haven't needed to apply any compatibility settings for the game under Steam/Win 10.

I edited the last comment after you did, so I thought I'd point out that doing the compatibility mode is indeed what messed up (so had to do it all again, glad to have fast internet). In any case, do you know why the game would be crashing then as often as it has been? I've watched Corey's let's play (and somone else that I can't recall) and they don't have those same issues.

Settings shouldn't matter for that. When it crashes, do you get an exception error or does it just drop, and does it happen in the base game?

Actually, I'm getting two crashes. The exception error I've since resolved by just not alt+tabbing. Slightly inconvenient but I can live with that. The other one is far more frustrating for two reasons. First and foremost is it just crashes. This will occur just as a battle (land or space). Whenever I hit the start battle button, game just drops. The second issue though and probably more odd, is that it deletes the last save. Generally speaking this is an autosave as it's right before a battle. But I have seen on a rare occassion when just saving the game it will delete that after crash.

And no problems running the vanilla game.

Try using Large Address Aware on the exe:

It's typically used for Sins, but it can help with a lot of older games.

Yeah, I tried that, but got an error 51 code which I'm not quite sure why that would be as my understanding is that error code occurs because it CANT use more than 2GB or RAM which that's what LAA is supposed to fix. Regardless, turns out it was an exception error that I was getting (I got it confused with a Direct 3D one that I managed to solve on my own). But is there something else I should be doing to stomp out that exception error? I forgot to mention that along with crashing upon trying to load the battle map, the other time is during an orbital strike. After reading the error report, I made sure the game was to be run as administrator.

Edit: Thought I'd let you know that after a little research, that doesn't work on steam versions of the game. Ultimately, I'll just have to buy the game on GOG whenever it goes on sale as it seems to of been tweaked to work with modern systems. But in the meantime any help is certainly appreciated. I looked at the other mods but none do what this one does and satisfies that itch just better.

Update: Steam doesn't like me messing with those executables. It would just crash the moment I tried opening it with administrator mode active. Ended up taking it off there to prevent it from occurring again. Still stuck with those pesky crashes though that at this point, not sure how to deal with it. I can provide the report if it would help you guys bug squash. But for now, I can be diligent with my saves and just play the game. The one thing I am puzzled and would like to hear your input on because I've never seen it before, is why does the game delete my last save when it crashes?

Does it happen every single time, or are there some battles or OBs where it doesn't? You said every other battle at first, but this is weird, so the more specific information you can give, the better.

Well, I can tell you one spot I can get it crash every time. If I'm in the middle of a game and I tried to load a separate save, the game will crash and delete said save. And it'll also crash if I try to save over an existing save. However, were I to exit out to the main menu and load the game, then everything's fine and it doesn't crash. Same is true by just creating a new save. I did go and make the folder that holds the save not "read-only" and that seems to of resolved the crashes when loading into a random space/land battle map. Unfortunately, I couldn't give you a pattern on that one because if there was one, I didn't see it.

Edit: If I had to guess, it's probably something to do with the Auto-Save mechanic. Wouldn't be the first game Auto-Save messes with the game after all.

My game crashes on startup, Stormtrooper picture comes up then crashes to desktop. Regular Empire at War runs fine, I also am able to run the ACM2.4 mod without any problems. I have installed the ram update, I just did a fresh install of the retail gold pack, I looked in the mod directory as well as the FOC main directory for logfiles, but I didn't find any. One other thing: does this mod work on 32 bit machines? because my computer is a 32bit... or maybe the graphics aren't powerful enough, after all it's really not a great computer. And are there specific operating systems this has to be run on? Because I have a dual xp/win 7 installation, and I'm trying this in the xp environment. I'll be grateful for any help with this.

Question that you might be able to help with. Had everything running well(yodel, icw, RAW, clone wars) at one point, but somewhere along the way messed with some files and screwed it up. Uninstalled everything. Reinstalled everything. Now FoC works, just the vanilla game. At first it had the exception error, but when the ram fix was installed and the game is ran in windows xp(service pack three) and only that it starts and plays. Now, the icw mod has the exception error and won’t start. The vanilla game still plays tho. Haven’t tried any other mods but can you or someone help? Running out of ideas to fix it back to how it was on my computer

Update to this. When it’s run by administrator, the original runs on windows 7.
Still can’t get imperial civil war to run tho. Always pops up with an exception erotor

ok so i got both mods to work and run. the issue i have got into now is the imaging is a little off. black lines sort of flash across my screen as a play, its very distracting. Its almost as if the images are doubling then laying over one another. Any suggestions on how to fix that? it happened on the base game but my fix was to change the compatibility mode then when it happens in game i click both mouse buttons at the same time, but im not sure how to change that on this one since i cant find it under properties.

Anything related to properties would be in the same place for the mod as for the base game. Sounds like a potential graphics card issue, though.

Hi there

I'm having an issue getting the game to load. I own the retail versions of EaW and FoC. I've installed them both today and downloaded the mod.

I've got the .bat file out of my mods folder and into my normal FoC folder. I click on it, FoC tries to load but then seems to freeze very early on and then crashes. I get a message about saying EaW/FoC has stopped working. I sometimes get an option to try and resolve that issue but it doesn't work.

*If* I run FoC off the EAWXLauncher or the desktop shortcut it runs fine.

I'm running windows 7 on my PC.

Any thoughts/ suggestions?

The mod is several times the size of the base game due to all the extra content we've squeezed in.  Start-up has correspondingly longer loading times.  Try giving it a few more minutes on the load screen.  If it isn't properly crashing on you that probably just means it's still collating files.

Though I do not have a computer brain so I can't tell what is going on, just that every time I launch ICW2.1 I get Pop-up saying Execption _logfile.txt and except.txt have had a problem and I try to debug but it just stops the program and shuts it down. I have FOC running in compatibility with Win. Vista, but I don't think the .bat file can be changed :P

First, sorry for my bad english, I'm belgian. I write this post for my kid. We install this mod on my pc under windows 7. My son has star wars empire at war force of corruption gold edtion (disk). I followed all steps shown in the video. And it doesn't work. The game starts and stops at the shoulder of the stormtrooper and come back to desktop. I've tried several times (install/uninstall). I've downloaded FOC RAM MPLOBBY update. It's not better. I've no other mods .
Can you help me ? I read a lot of things about this but impossible to solve the problem.
